Trek to Malana
Summary
Below the Chanderkhani pass of the Kullu valley lies a small cluster of around two hundred stone roof houses constituting a village called Malana. Its inmitable culture and the temple of the Jamlu distinguish the village.The village consist of 1500 inhabitants and has an impeccable system of administration with a higher and lower court. Guided by the spirit of the village God Jamlu. Malana stands out as an autonomous, self sufficient unit where inhabitants claim Greek ancestry.
Some stories about the village called a”little Greece”. This village in the interior of the Himalya is its architecture, language, worship rituals and autonomous administrative system. The unique geographical location of Malana. Has availed it to preserve its biodiversity and it is an ecologically heaven.
Malana is connected to kullu by three mountain passes.It can be reached from Parvati valley crossing over the Rashol pass(3180mts.) and via Nagger over the 3600mts. Beautiful chanderkhani pass. The easiest way to Malana is from Jari. Which is 23 km. far from the Malana. Chowki , A small hamlet and the nearest village to Malana. However , the people of Chowki have nothing common with the Malanese.. For the out sider, there is a long list of do’s and don’ts to be followed in the village. The people are friendly but out sider are told to keep distance and not to touch any thing in village
Malana is divided into two upper Malana(Dhara Bhed) and lower Malana (sora Bhed)
Kanashi , the language of Malana does not resemble any of the dialect spoken in its neighborhood but seems to be a mixture of Sanskrit and several Tibetan dialects.
Two important festivals are celebrated in Malana. One called Budoh Mela is celebrated in august and other called Fagli mela in Feb.
Tour itinerary
- Day - 1 : Manali to Nagger (1740mts.) 21km. Drive then trek to Rumsu (2377mts.) 3hrs.

From Manali we drive 21 km. on the left bank of Beas river. Which presents spectacular sights of villages along the way.. at Nagger we visit Nicolas Roe rich ( Russian) art gallery and Nagger Castle and start trek to Rumsu. A gentle climb through apple orchards to lovely village.
- Day - 2 : Rumsu to Base of Chanderkhani pass.(3600mts.) 5hrs.

Today easy climb through the forests of the Conifer to alpine meadows which offer a magnificent view of Pir Panjal Range and peaks rising above 6000 mts. Over night camp.
- Day - 3 : Base of Chanderkhani to Chanderkhani Pass(3660mts.) then to Malana.(2650mts.)

A lovely trail which leads to pass and offer splendid view of Dhoula dhar range, Parvati valley and Malana valley. We descent to Malana which is steep.
Evening visit Malana village and explore the local life. Over night camp at Malana. - Day - 4 : Malana to Rashol Pass(3180mts.) to Rashol /Village(2590mts.) 6 hrs/ or drive Malana dame site to Manali then trek will be 4 days

A descent to malana river, we cross the bridge and climb to Rashol Pass and enter in to Parvati valley. Easy descent to Rashol village. Over night camp.
- Day - 5 : Rashol to Kasol 4hrs. then drive to manikaran then to Manali 90km.

To day we walk through the forest of deodar cross the Parvati river before arriving Kasol.We drive to Manikaran hot spring and then drive to Manali 90 km..
